The Kugoo M4 and M4 Pro are among the most popular e-scooters on UK roads — powerful, comfortable, and built for longer commutes. But like any scooter that gets daily use, the M4 develops a few predictable faults over time. The good news is that most of them are well understood and fixable, often with a single replacement part.
This guide runs through the most common Kugoo M4 problems we see, what usually causes each one, and how to fix it. Work through whichever section matches your symptom.
1. Kugoo M4 won't turn on
A completely dead M4 is most often a power or battery issue rather than a major fault.
Quick checks first: make sure it's charged, hold the power button for 2–3 seconds (not a quick tap), and check the battery connector under the deck hasn't worked loose — the M4's connectors can vibrate slightly loose over time on bumpy rides.
If it still won't power on: the usual culprits are a failing battery or a faulty controller. If the scooter had been losing range before it died, suspect the battery. If it cut out suddenly while riding and never came back, suspect the controller. You can find replacement batteries and controllers for the M4 in our parts range. For a full walkthrough, see our guide on what to do when an e-scooter won't turn on.
2. Kugoo M4 won't charge or won't hold charge
If the M4 powers on but won't charge — or drains far faster than it used to — there are two likely causes.
The charger: always test this first, as it's the cheaper fix. Plug the charger into the wall alone and check its indicator light. If there's no light, or the light never changes when connected to the scooter, the charger may have failed. A replacement M4 charger costs far less than a battery.
The battery: if the charger is fine but range has dropped noticeably, or the charger turns green almost instantly (suggesting the battery won't accept charge), the battery has likely reached the end of its life. The M4 uses a 48V battery with a built-in BMS, and after a couple of years of charge cycles a replacement is the usual fix. Browse replacement M4 batteries here.
3. Loss of Power or Cutting Out While Riding
If your M4 suddenly loses power, cuts out, or won't pull as it used to — especially uphill — the cause is usually one of three things.
- Battery: a worn battery struggles to deliver power under load, so cut-outs often happen on hills or hard acceleration.
- Controller: a failing controller can cause intermittent cut-outs or sudden power loss. If it's accompanied by a burning smell or followed water exposure, suspect the controller.
- Motor: less common, but a worn or damaged hub motor can cause power loss and unusual noises.
You'll find replacement motors and controllers for the M4 in our electricals range.
4. Brake Problems
The M4 uses disc brakes, and brake issues are one of the most common — and most important — faults to address quickly.
Weak or spongy braking: usually worn brake pads or a brake cable that needs adjusting or replacing. Pads are a wear item and need periodic replacement.
Squealing or grinding: often a worn disc or contaminated pads. A warped or worn brake disc should be replaced rather than persisted with.
You can find brake pads, discs, calipers and cables for the Kugoo M4 in our brakes and suspension collection. Never ride with compromised brakes — it's the one fault worth fixing immediately.
5. Flat or Damaged Tyres
The M4's off-road tyres take a beating, and punctures or worn tread are common. If you're tired of dealing with punctures, many M4 owners switch to solid or honeycomb tyres for a puncture-proof ride.
Browse replacement M4 tyres here, and if you're weighing up your options, our guide on solid vs honeycomb tyres explains the difference.
6. Wobbly Stem or Loose Folding Mechanism
Over time the M4's folding mechanism can develop play, causing a wobble at the stem. This is usually an adjustment or a worn folding clamp rather than a serious fault — but it should be sorted promptly, as stem wobble affects handling and safety. Check the folding clamp and hinge bolts first; if a part is worn, you'll find frame and body parts in our range.
7. Display or Dashboard Issues
If the display flickers, shows nothing, or behaves erratically, it's often water ingress (the dashboard sits exposed on the handlebars) or a loose connection. If a dried-out, reseated display still won't work, a replacement may be needed — check our electricals collection for M4 displays and dashboards.
Quick Diagnosis Summary
- Totally dead → battery or controller
- Won't charge → test the charger first, then the battery
- Cuts out / loses power uphill → battery, then controller or motor
- Weak or noisy brakes → pads, cable or disc
- Punctures → switch to solid or honeycomb tyres
- Stem wobble → folding clamp / hinge bolts
- Dark or glitchy screen → display, often after water
