E-Scooter Maintenance Checklist: Keep Yours Running

E-Scooter Maintenance Checklist: Keep Yours Running

An e-scooter is a machine like any other, a little regular care keeps it safe, reliable, and running for years longer. Most breakdowns don't happen out of nowhere; they build up from small issues that go unchecked. This simple maintenance checklist covers everything worth keeping an eye on, split into quick regular checks and occasional deeper ones, so you can catch problems early and keep your scooter on the road.

Before every ride (10 seconds)

  • Brakes: squeeze the lever — it should firm up well before the grip and stop the wheel cleanly.
  • Tyres: a quick glance for obvious damage, and on pneumatic tyres, that they're not visibly flat.
  • Folding lock: make sure the stem is fully locked and there's no wobble before you set off.

These three take seconds and are the difference between a safe ride and a nasty surprise.

Weekly checks

  • Tyre pressure (pneumatic tyres): check they're inflated to the recommended pressure — under-inflated tyres wear faster, puncture more easily, and reduce range.
  • Tyre tread and condition: look for wear, cuts, or embedded debris. Worn tread means less grip.
  • Brake feel: notice if braking has become weaker or noisier — an early sign the pads need attention.
  • Bolts and fixings: a quick look over the stem, handlebars and folding mechanism for anything working loose.

Monthly checks

  • Brake pads: inspect for wear. Thin or glazed pads should be replaced before they damage the disc. Browse brake parts here.
  • Tighten fixings: go around the scooter with the right tools and firm up any bolts that have loosened — especially the folding clamp and handlebar fixings.
  • Clean the scooter: wipe down the deck, wheels and frame. Avoid jet-washing — forcing water into the electronics is a leading cause of controller and display failure.
  • Check the folding mechanism: any developing play or wobble should be adjusted or the worn part replaced. You'll find frame and folding parts here.
  • Cables and connectors: a quick look for fraying, damage or corrosion, particularly if you ride in the wet.

Looking after your battery

The battery is the most expensive part of your scooter, so a few habits make it last much longer:

  • Don't run it flat routinely — regularly draining to empty shortens a lithium battery's life. Top up before it gets too low.
  • Don't leave it at full charge for long periods — for storage, around half charge is kinder to the cells.
  • Charge in the dry, at room temperature — avoid charging a cold battery straight after a winter ride; let it warm up first.
  • Use the correct charger — the one matched to your scooter's voltage. Browse chargers here if yours needs replacing.

When range starts dropping noticeably despite good habits, the battery is nearing the end of its life — you'll find replacement batteries here.

Seasonal / occasional checks

  • Before winter: check tyres, brakes and lights, and be extra careful about keeping water out of the electronics.
  • After wet rides: dry the scooter and check connectors — water ingress is the most common cause of display and controller faults.
  • Every few months: a fuller once-over of brakes, tyres, bolts, battery health and folding mechanism.

Catching problems early saves money

Almost every expensive repair starts as a cheap one that was missed. Worn brake pads left too long ruin the disc. An under-inflated tyre punctures and can damage the rim. Water left in a connector kills a controller. A few minutes of regular checks keeps small parts small — and keeps you safe.

If a check turns up something that needs replacing, we stock UK spare parts for Xiaomi, Kugoo, iScooter, Aovo, Ninebot and more — tyres, brakes, batteries, chargers, controllers and more, with free delivery over £25 and 30-day returns.
